While talking with a friend today, he insisted on how unnecessary were the smartphone apps, how instagram and similar app filters were stupid etc. He believes smartphones (also galaxy note, I told him it is not the same, but nada, he kept going on his rant :D ) To prove him wrong and to give a quick example, I made up a video game concept: Frontier, aftermath Mayan Armageddon there are survivors at Sirince, wearing nuclear masks soldiers are fighting against mutants etc :)
So I am the digital artist, I am given the task to create a quick concept (first draft) art work for the game. I am stuck at the road, crazy Istanbul traffic… What do I do? Take out my phone, use generative drawing, painting.. using geometric shapes with the pen tip of my galaxy note, I start putting together the general colors, paint, blurred shapes etc. This takes 15 min of my time. I have a good understanding of perspective, colors and so on. For the soldier figures, sure I can draw them spending some time, but I don’t want to. So I go online and find couple images of soldiers throw them to pixlr express, using blur tool, I start altering them. Then throw them to my other app to draw basic details on them, then paint. This takes 15 min again.
At the final steps, I put together all the layers, then go to pixlr again to apply color filters. I didn’t use instagram because instagram crops images to square, not useful on stuff like this. Anyway, most pixlr filters are similar to instagram’s filters.
It is pretty easy to apply text and text effects as well. Overall in 45 minutes, this piece was done. I used photoshop when I take these images to computer a bit ago, to resize etc.
As I always say, an apple computer, photoshop. illustrator, and other software do not make a person designer or a digital artist. A designer knows how to use tools, gathers his choice of tools and use them to achieve his goals. Design process starts in the brain, methods differ.
Overall, smartphones are useful. Smartphone with a pen? More useful. Instagram and similar apps? Useful. If you know how to use them, more useful. Plus, there are really great visuals, photos at instagram. It is an online community, it has a culture to itself, if you don’t understand it, don’t hate it. Like how the most expensive and superb pro camera is not making a person a good photographer, instagram is not making every picture amazing. It is a tool.
And of course this is not a good art piece or anything. But for getting fast results, and delivering the concept idea for a 1st draft, it gets the work done. Saves the day? Saves the day :)
